Church Tours to Benefit Capital Campaign

On Saturday mornings starting May 26 and continuing through the month of October from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. the First Congregational Church of Lee will be offering a guided tour of the sanctuary including a brief history of the founding of the church. Records of the church dating back to the 1780s will be available upon request.

The Lee Congregational Church built in 1857 is an unusually fine example of Romanesque style of architecture and is the dominant feature of the church park on which it stands. It is reputed to have the tallest wooden frame steeple in the United States under which the bell tower houses a bell weighing 2,000 pounds. The tower also houses a Seth Thomas Clock System, still wound weekly by hand that tolls the time every hour.

The sanctuary with its "trompe l'oeil" (fool-the-eye) stenciling done by itinerant French and German artists in 1858 ia s breathtaking sight. Not a day goes by that a visitor doesn't take a photo of this beautiful church whose spire can be seen for miles as one enters downtown Lee. It is one of the most photographed buildings in the town.

The congregation is involved in a capital campaign to raise $500,000 to renovate, restore, preserve this historic Lee landmark. All proceeds from the tours will go to the capital campaign. Donations are $5.00 per person and children under 12, accompanied by adults, will be admitted free.
